Healthy Glow Face Serum

When it comes to my beauty routine I like to keep things really simple. I feel that a few trustee products is all one needs in their toolbox of everyday items…plus it makes mornings that much easier for this mama. I have never really been one to fuss over beauty products, it’s just not my thing, but I do love a good moisturizer. And a good mascara! About three years ago I stopped using store-bought face creams and lotions and started using coconut oil as my after shower all over moisturizer. I had read dozens of magazine articles about this new hippie craze and my fellow mama friends were telling me how I must try the stuff. Of course, they were right on.  Coconut oil was a wonderful all-natural product I could use on my skin as well as a healthy addition to many wholesome recipes.

Coconut oil is a very light moisturizer that absorbs quickly, making it ideal for those who want to give a little moisture here and there. I liked that my new skin routine consisted of one ingredient (the fact that I could pronounce it was a bonus!) and that it was much more cost effective than the other serums that I had been purchasing at beauty stores. However, over the course of a few months after applying it everyday, it was clear I needed something else to keep my skin looking healthy without clogging my pores. I am prone to this and I did not know that coconut oil can actually exacerbate this problem with certain skin types! I read more about this issue and found out that depending on your skin type this oil on its own has a range of effects and is not necessarily the best option for those with very dry or oily skin. We no longer use this on it’s own with Theodore who has eczema because it was making his delicate skin worse, poor guy.

I loved the idea of using a green product from the earth and wanted to stay away from putting harsh chemicals on my face. I looked into essential oils and other helpful skin oils and came up with the following recipe with help from a friend who had been using oils far longer than I. It includes other moisturizers like jojoba and vitamin E, and gives the option to add shea butter or cocoa butter if your skin is prone to dryness.

This blend is currently sitting on the shelf in our bathroom, the one beauty product I use on both my face and neck after showering. It’s a serum I travel with and use each and everyday. I have noticed my skin looking healthier than it ever has before, free of blemished and dry patches. Dear ones, I simply cannot recommend this remedy enough to you! I have made this recipe in both big and small batches and sometimes give little containers away to friends to bless them for their birthday. My mother in law swears by the stuff and has passed this recipe on to her friends and so on. You could call it anti-aging. You could call it cell-resotriative. It’s indeed both of those. It’s also just really wonderful healthy glow face serum because it does just that…it gives your skin a healthy all-natural glow. This recipe should last you a long, long time dears!

Healthy Glow Face Serum

  • 1/2 cup Organic Coconut Oil – You’ll want the solid coconut oil for this so when it cools it hardens a little bit and making it easier to apply. I buy my organic coconut oil at the market, you can find it everywhere nowadays. *If you’re wanting more moisture and more of a cream rather than a serum for the winter months, cut this amount of coconut oil in half and replace that with 1/2 cup of organic shea butter OR 1/2 organic cocoa butter.
  • 1/8 cup Organic Jojoba Oil – This is not actually an oil but a liquid wax packed with vitamins.  Jojoba oil is the only oil that closely resembles human sebum – an oily substance naturally produced by the oil glands below the skin surface, so its uses and benefits to the skin and hair are high. It is a perfect choice for those who want to use natural products for their skin, hair and face care. I buy this at natural goods stores.
  • 1/8 cup Organic Vitamin E Oil – Praised as an antioxidant that can help reduce scaring.
  • 20 drops Frankincense Essential Oil – Refining and grounding as it nourishes your skin with rich, deep, balsamic like overtones. It’s my go-to skin oil and can repair your damaged skin cells. It’s ability to smooth the skin is why it is a beauty routine favorite.
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil – Helps reduce the appearance of blemishes while maintaining healthy looking skin.
  • 10 drops of Lavender Essential Oil – Soothes your skin while helping clear and brighten. This is my second favorite skin oil and one we use on the kids skin to help give moisture when the air is dry. Lavender oil balances the body in so many ways, traditionally known to work where it’s needed…the swiss army knife of the essential oil family.

To make, melt the coconut oil in a double boiler over medium heat with the jojoba oil and vitamin E oil. You could go ahead and just mix them without melting the coconut oil down, but your serum will have small solids in it which can be rather annoying. Once the coconut oil is melted, add in your essential oils and sit in a cool place so it can set. Your serum should be stored in a cool, dark place.

For those wanting to start using essential oils as a part of their all natural wellness routines, it’s nice to know that all three of these essential oils are included in the Premium Starter Kit. You can read more about joining our wellness family here and read about more essential oil remedies here.

So do you use coconut oil on your face? Do you like it? Tell me what works for you!

  • Johnna LaFaith - Wonderful! I love things like this. Coconut oil is already a fave for me. I make a lot of my own scrubs and such for skin care. I, like you said, value knowing what goes into it. Thanks for sharing.ReplyCancel

  • Eternalvoyageur - I just wanted to tell you that I’m happy to have found your new blog but it was only by chance that I did. I wanted to access the old one and it’s completely blocked — I could not see a single page. So I used the Waybackmachine to read some of your old posts. It was by chance that I also noticed the newest post with the link leading here.

So maybe you should leave something up on your old blog that leads here? Otherwise old readers will not find their way here.ReplyCancel

    • admin - Thank you for this, just made it public again 🙂 x AmandaReplyCancel

  • Elizabeth - Hello Amanda, I’d love to try this but in Europe we don’t measure in “cups” – do you know how many grams this translates to? Or what size “cup” do you mean?ReplyCancel

    • Meg - 1 cup is 8 ounces (1 ounce per 28 grams)/ so 1/2 cup is 4 ounces 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Jeanette - thanks for this recipe! I cannot wait to try it. Currently I use coconut oil for face and body and love it. I’ve used it for years. I don’t have issues with it and it works so very well and its so simple but as I get older…ahem…a little extra something for the face and neck is needed. I will make some of your serum up to try! thanks!ReplyCancel

  • Maria - I love coconut oil for my body but not for my skin, since I have acne tendency (despite my 30s…) and it gives me an “oily look”. Do you know any other oils that could work well for this recipe and acne prone skin? Thank you!ReplyCancel

    • admin - Maria – Have you heard of Argan oil? I have read some neat things about it! Might have to give it a try. x AmandaReplyCancel

      • Maria - Yes I have 🙂 I discovered it in Morocco a few years ago and I have used it for my hair and body ever since, it’s wonderful! But still too oily for my face. Since I wrote this comment I have been researching and I think I’m going to try hemp seed oil. It’s not comedogenic at all, so we’ll see! I can give you my opinion when I try it. Thank you very much the reply!ReplyCancel

  • Kayla - What organic vitamin E oil do you use/would you recommend??ReplyCancel

    • Rachel - Trader Joe’s sells vitamin E oil, I use it for lip balms and love it!ReplyCancel

  • Natalie @ Little Jam Pot Life Blog - This sounds amazing, I love coconut oil. will try this out for sure 🙂 xReplyCancel

  • Meagan - Love this! I can’t wait to try it out. Do you have any brand recommendations for the jojoba and vitamin e oil??ReplyCancel

    • admin - Meagan – I get my oils at either Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods 🙂 x AmandaReplyCancel

  • Lara - I found your blog via instagram, and I can’t remember how I found you on instagram! 🙂 But I just wanted to tell you what a lovely space you have here. We live in So Mo, but my husband’s family is still in the KC area, and it has a special place in our heart. Your home is lovely and your family so sweet.ReplyCancel

  • Kizzy - I have been reading so much about coconut oil recently and I am looking to start creating my own products so thanks for the recipe.ReplyCancel

  • Rachel - Can’t wait to try this. I actually just purchased a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s Tea Tree scented soap at TJ Maxx of all places, and the ingredients are similar to your serum! Coconut oil, jojoba oil, tea tree. I use it to wash my face in the mornings and love it, if you’re looking for an inexpensive cleanser!ReplyCancel

  • Brandi - I can’t wait to try this. Thank you for sharing. I’ve been a loyal Oil of Olay fan for so many years, but I agree with you, it’s nice to know exactly what’s in your cream and going onto/into your skin. I’ve been very curious/interested in the essential oils as well, thank you for linking that information.ReplyCancel

  • Zoe - I’m in my 30s and have sensitive skin, one day i look like a teenager with zits everywhere, the next I’m dry as a desert. i went from using harsh products like proactiv, then switching to less harmful products like derma-e and alba (which i still have in my rotation) but coconut oil seems to balance me out! I was looking to include tee tree oil in my routine so i will be making your serum for sure! i also use coconut oil on a dry brush when i get out of an epsom salt/lavender oil bath, exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time! i also give my cat a tiny bit every few days for his digestion! now when he hears the jar open he runs into the bathroom, he loves it too!ReplyCancel

  • rebecca - Don’t often comment on blogs, but wanted to tell you that yours is simply gorgeous! Love your photos, style, everything. I made this serum the other night and while I haven’t used it long enough to see what will happen long term, I can say that it feels wonderful on and when I wake up in the morning my skin is soft and smooth! Thank you and keep up the good work!ReplyCancel

  • Anna - just ordered all my ingredients, and can’t wait to make/use this. its just what we all need in this house! thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Sara - Hi there – thanks for sharing this recipe! What brand of organic vitamin e oil do you use?ReplyCancel

  • Kate - Thank you for sharing this recipe! I will definitely give it a go.
I have very oily skin. I do use coconut oil everyday, and it doesn’t effect me or make my skin ‘more oily’, but do you think this serum will be ok on oily skin?ReplyCancel

  • Sarah - I just made a batch of this tonight! Thanks for the recipe. Do you think this would be safe to use on a 6 month old? He has some eczema, and coconut oil isn’t cutting it anymore.ReplyCancel

  • Sherrie - Thanks so much for sharing the recipe! I have been struggling to make or buy a face cream that will agree with my finicky skin for years, so I was excited to give this one a try! I used equal parts coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter in place of the 1/2 cup coconut oil. My skin LOVES this stuff! I’ve been using it for almost a month (I made it almost the minute you posted the recipe) morning and night, and it’s great. The consistency of my batch is weird, though; runny with little grainy bits. I melted everything down but maybe it has something to do with changing it up and adding the shea and cocoa butter. Or maybe I should have stirred as it cooled? Regardless, thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Courtne - I’m loving all your posts. My 2 year old have severe eczema and we can’t seem to get it under control for more than a day without him breaking out again. We’ve found that coconut oil multiple times a day works well, but wondered if you have something else you have found that helps soothe eczema. Thanks!ReplyCancel

  • Larisa - I’m going to make this today! It totally makes sense to have one go to product, and one that is truly all natural. Thank you for posting these ideas and making me want to live a cleaner and healthier life for me and my little one!ReplyCancel

  • Pat - As I’ve mentioned before, I like to glow. However, I do not like to be shiny. I also find that my somewhat-dry skin, gets a ‘lil greasier during the summer, which is to be expected. Right now, the ONLY THING I will use in the summer is the Lady Soma Renewal Serum – It’s keeping my skin conditioned, fresh, and not too shiny, no matter the heat!!!ReplyCancel

  • Audrey - Hi!

For the jojoba oil, you mean “jojoba oil“ and not jojoba essential oil..?

    😀

    Thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Syrina - Hi there! I realize this post is super old, but I am wanting to try out this face serum recipe. I am new to essential oils and working towards switching out products in my house so we are using less chemicals. I’m curious if you make your own face wash and if so, how do you make it? Also, what do you typically use in your skin care line up? I am a mama to 3 little ones too and don’t always have time to fuss over getting ready in the morning or before bed.ReplyCancel

    • admin - Syrina, you will love this recipe. I don’t make my own face wash but use Dr. Bronnar’s for everything. Burt’s Bees has a nice bark scrub too that I like. x AmandaReplyCancel

  • Mandy - My skin is a little too acne prone for coconut oil so I made this amazing face serum by adding your combination of essential oils to a small bottle of rosehip seed oil (a bit lower than coconut oil on the comedogenic scale) — the result is just perfect. Thank you so much for the inspiration!ReplyCancel

  • Kaitlin - Hi! I just made this tonight and it never resolidified at all… any recommendations? It’s pure liquid..ReplyCancel

  • Misha - I made this last night and I’m so excited to use it. It still hasn’t resolidified though… any suggestions? I ended up putting it in the fridge 😐ReplyCancel

  • Anna Cesnjevar - Constant Comment tea by Bigelow is one of my favorites! I had no idea they now have a Benefits line. I will be investigating this next time I go grocery shopping. Thank you for the infReplyCancel

  • Alaina - Love this serum recipe. Out of curiosity, what do you use for face wash? (Whether it be store bought or homemade 😊)ReplyCancel

    • admin - Alaina, I love St. Ives Apricot Scrub 🙂 Ever since high school, in fact! x AmandaReplyCancel

  • Tabitha1950 - Wow! Wonderful read, very interesting. I have never made my own face serum before, or any skincare product. I might give this a try and see how it works for my skin. I currently use Caudalie’s Vinactive Serum from b-glowing and absolutely love it.ReplyCancel
