Here are some photos I snapped this weekend while we putzed around the house…yes we are home, with a lively and lovely mix of what’s going on in our spring garden because the colors are just so pretty right now. Our holiday last week, which was supposed to be a refreshing time away with Andrew’s family, fell a bit short. Every other year everyone on his side of the family gets together for a reunion of sorts to connect and spend time with those we rarely get to see due to distance. It’s always a very special time. On this getaway we all got really sick a few days in and disappointing majority of our trip was spent in bed being all kinds of miserable and trying not to get sick on each other. Wah. The yuckies started with Andrew and I, so naturally, we figured it must have been something we ate. After going to the clinic for IVs and medication (it was that bad) we came home to house full of sickies and then everyone started going down one by one. This was his parent’s Christmas gift to all of us, something we each look forward to and cherish more than tangible items to open, aaaand we spent it holding buckets for one another. Talk about getting close…perhaps not the kind of close we wanted, but close nevertheless haha. I am just thankful we are well again and not stuck in a germy house miles away from home even if we are not as refreshed as we had hoped to be upon return.
Now we are back at it starting new projects and sorting out old ones. Andrew made our clothesline this weekend but decided it still needs cement because it’s not sturdy enough, so I am stilling hanging things on our drying rack and on the backs of chairs. I too did a handful of housekeeping things that kept me busy between chasing Alfie around and cleaning up a muddy Theodore. I tended to our all plants and vegetables, which all survived and flourished while we were away, and also took off all the screens on the lower level of our home and scrubbed them and the window panes behind them. This was a project that has been on my mind forever because our windows were horribly dirty, I just never wanted to take the time to unscrew all those screen frames and deal with putting them back on or in the basement. But I finally decided to do it and now our kitchen singing! Glory be! I also cleaned out the air vents that were clogged with cheerios and unidentifiables that was gross, but definitely a worthy pursuit. Things like this, deep cleaning and such, make all the difference for a clean home…they take but once or twice a year and that’s that. Hard work and scrubbin’ totally pays off when you take time to do things the old-fashioned way even if they do take a little time out of your day. I am one of those odd ducks that actually enjoys this type of stuff so it was a Saturday and Sunday well spent.
As for the kids, Stella had her first soccer match and it went…okay. She was super reluctant to do anything once we arrived but Andrew talked her into running around on the field a little bit, so I’d say it was a semi-success. She also never touched the ball with her hands so score. After that we visited the kid’s new Waldorf school and got to meet with their teachers. Schools here in downtown Kansas City are very interesting to say the least because we do not have the best public options. We are blessed to have a lot of charter and private ones, but you really have to be on your game to get in as many of them require a lottery or early and expensive entrance fees. We love the Waldorf philosophy so we are happily going that route this coming school year and I am really excited about it. Theo loved his new classroom with all the woods and felts and silks and books and I am ridiculously eager to attend with him a few days a week. More on this as it approaches.
Does anyone know about sprouting onions? That one in the mug up there decided to grow while we were gone so I put her in the window sill and gave her water…but I don’t really know what is happening or what I am doing? Have your old onions ever sprouted before? I must say, this is a first for me and I find that little onion to be so very darling. Maybe I should plant it? Hm.
As for this week, I feel like I have a million things I want to get done. Most of them pretty non-essential, like patching holes in the walls and caulking things and getting more toys and books ready to donate. We are always pairing down over here it seems. And then there are also things that I must do but have been dreading, like sorting the bills and organizing our junk drawer and make too many phone calls to doctors and dentists and all that grown-up stuff. Time to get crackin’! Here’s to being heathy again…cheers to a new week dears!
Sydney - Yes. You can easily transplant your little onion out into your garden. Right now, your onion is sprouting and the greenery is reaching for light. It is using up all the goodness of the onion bulb to do it. You will have a nice new onion (or two) come late summer, early fall. Good luck.
Johnna LaFaith - Such a wonderful look into your life. <3
Ashton - I was just reading about the Waldorf method last night in regards to Eden. We are not quite sure if we are going to homeschool or what yet, but I am starting research. 🙂 Anyways, it was the first time I had ever heard about it (even in regards to homeschooling) and I was quite fascinated by the approach.
I would love to hear more about how you guys like it once you get into it!
Also, so glad to hear you guys are feeling better! We got hit with that same kind of bug this past week and it has been rough!
Meghan - A little off topic but I’m loving your photography! 😘
Ginny Bryzgalova - These pictures make me so excited for spring! Your photography is absolutely stunning! 🙂
Jackie - I love the way the sprouting onion looks in the mug! 🙂 Very springy. I was in a Waldorf school recently taking an early childhood training called LifeWays (amazing!) and they had a few sprouting onions on the nature table, so cute.
I’ve been loving your blog and am very excited that you’re entering the world of Waldorf education – your little ones are soooo lucky and so are you as a parent! Can’t wait to hear more!
stacia - just wondering how your onion is doing? did you end up planting it?
admin - Stacia, I did! It has sprouted green onions off the top that we use all the time. So great! x Amanda
stacia - so wait, you took an onion placed it in a cup and it sprouted shoots? just a regular old onion? how did you plant it? ball in the ground? if you did that i cannot believe how many onions i have tossed because they sprouted and i thought they went bad.
this has really caught my attention? a neighbor grows wild onions and takes cuttings and puts them through out the alley in my neighborhood around where you might see wildflowers. and these huge wild onions grow and smell unreal.
admin - Stacia, I did! I watered it and placed it in the sun and it started to sprout. I just planted it like all my other veggies and it has continued to do well and thrive. x Amanda
