I have another homemade all natural beauty product to share with you and I am really excited about this one. After experimenting with different concoctions this past weekend I think I’ve got a pretty solid recipe for no melt his and hers homemade deodorant. That’s right! No melt. My first two recipes were okay, but they ended up softening too much in the medicine cabinet because summer. I found a great solution to this – beeswax!

Andrew and I have been using natural deodorant for a long time now but I really never thought to make my own. I assumed something like deodorant would be way too complex and not really work, so we used a natural store-bought variety. Most recently I bought a local homemade deodorant (that was admittedly a bit too pricy for my taste) and seeing how well the homemade stuff worked, I got really intrigued to give it a try. I ended up making one for Andrew and myself because I didn’t think he’d want to smell like a bouquet of flowers but more like a mossy forest, which he later on confirmed.  I on the other hand like all the oils, woodsy or not, so I suppose I now have two deodorants. Below is a simple recipe with a few different essential oil combinations for both you and your mister.

Deodorant Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil (do not buy the fractioned kind as it will not harden)
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa butter OR shea butter
  • 3 tablespoons organic beeswax pellets
  • 20 drops YL essential oils
    • You can really get creative with this part, but remember to always use at least 5 drops of tea tree oil in each batch. Tea tree, or melaleuca, is known for its powerful antiseptic properties. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that destroy the bacteria on your skin that causes body odor.

The first thing you’ll need to do to make this recipe is gather your tools. You’ll need the following items to make this:

  • A sauce pan or old glass pyrex measuring cup you don’t mind ruining. I have one like this from Target and use it for all my essential oil concoctions.
  • Old spoon or whisk for stirring.
  • Empty deodorant containers. There are a wide variety out there but I settled on these and really like them.

Simple, right? This process is an easy one. First take your coconut oil, beeswax pellets and either cocoa butter or shea butter and heat them up. Use an old sauce pan or a glass pyrex cup over simmering water, and heat until the ingredients start to melt together. Stirring helps this process along. Once the beeswax pellets are melted take your pan off the heat and stir in the remaining ingredients. Mix well. Pour into your deodorant containers and store somewhere cool overnight. This mixture will harden pretty fast, so if you are really eager to try it out leave it sit for a few hours and you should be all set.

His Essential Oil Combinations:

  • Forest Floor
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 5 drops balsam fir oil
    • 10 drops pine oil
  • Cedar Cabin
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 5 drops cedarwood oil
    • 10 drops patchouli oil
  • Tobacco Leaves
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 5 drops sage oil
    • 10 drops vetiver oil

Hers Essential Oil Combinations:

  • Flower Bouquet
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 5 drops ylang ylang oil
    • 10 drops geranium oil
  • Lavender Fields
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 15 drops lavender oil
  • Citrus Burst
    • 5 drops tea tree oil
    • 5 drops purification oil
    • 10 drops bergamot oil

For a really powerful blend, use this!

  • 15 drops tea tree oil
  • 15 drops purification oil

A few more tidbits:

  • Because this recipe has beeswax in it, the likelihood that it will melt in your medicine cabinet is very slim. That being said, you should not leave this in direct sunlight because it will soften.
  • This is not an antiperspirant. You will still sweat. You will not, however, stink.
  • This recipe is easy to make and so inexpensive compared to all-natural store bought alternatives. For those who make a lot of your own products you most likely have all the ingredients needed to make this. So how helpful it is to have an all-natural pantry? And you can reuse you empty deodorant containers which is pretty nifty.

If you happen to give this a try let me know how you like it! What other homemade all natural beauty products have you always wanted to try? I have a face toner, dry skin balm and diaper bum balm next on my list!

Detox Bath in a jar …
    2 cups baking soda

15 drops of any combo EO
Toss it all into a big mason jar, add a cute tag with instructions. “Pour into full warm bath. Soak for 20 minutes. Enjoy!”ReplyCancel

  • Tanya - I make my own deodorant and got my recipe from my sister a few years back. She has been making her own for years but I was too leery of it and assumed it didn’t work well. Well, was I wrong! It works better than any store-bought deodorant I’ve ever tried, and now I NEVER stink. Unless I forget deodorant. 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Ashley - Thanks for sharing this, Amanda! We have been using natural store bought deodorant too, but I would prefer to make my own (along with other beauty care products on my list). I will have to save this recipe for future use as we don’t use essential oils yet – just not in our budget at this point 😕😩ReplyCancel

  • Jessie - Friend! I tried my hand at homemade deodorant a few months back and it was like you said, melty and wet and just weird. So back to my natural store brands I went. But this! The beeswax! A total game changer! I can already see how it might help smoothen out the chalkiness of the baking soda. I have 4/6 ingredients at home. Gonna try it out soon! xxReplyCancel
