Homesong Book Club 2018-2019 | Welcome & Sign Up!

It’s still dark outside but I couldn’t sleep. I blame it on the slight time difference that I am still readjusting to from our recent camping adventures in Yosemite, coupled with the fact that our Homesong Book Club has been on my mind all night! I have been eager to share my book selections with you, and getting up early before the kids wake to enjoy a cup as I look them over sounds like the right way to start things off, don’t you think? I have decided to do things a bit differently this year and really feel like it’s going to flow well with the rhythm of this space. Here’s what I propose:

Together, we will read 1 book per month starting September 1st, taking this community of readers though a seasonal theme that explores mindful living while reclaiming what it means to do things simply with care. Rather than share all the titles upfront with you, I am going to share them bundle by bundle at the dawn of each new season to keep things fresh. Each season will be comprised of the three following genres:

  1. Homemaking | Matters that relate to meaningful aspects of the home with regard to intriguing topics of care, cooking, self-care, and gardening, etc. that focus on patience, presence, and practice where we making a home and dwell.
  2. Parenting | Matters that relate to conscious parenting in today’s modern landscape with an emphasis on mindful approaches that involve slowing down and showing up in a myriad of meaningful ways for our children, family, and others we do life with.
  3. Existentialism | Matters, some of which are spiritual, while others take more of a naturalist perspective, concerned with the beauties, complexities, and mysteries surrounding our fragile existence and the broader brush strokes of life.

The books I’ve selected are ones that I feel are well aligned with the ethos of this space, titles I feel will add value to your life and depth to your library. The way in which we will connect as a book club moving forward will be as follows:

  • You can sign up to receive Homesong Book Club Newsletters above, where I will send several letters per month sharing my thoughts and various questions pertaining to the reading material.
  • At the end of the month we will reconvene here at Homesong (dates to follow) and share as a community where  you will be able to offer your insights about the book we’ve read, along with any questions or other findings in the comments section of the follow-up post.
  • For each book there will be 1-2 practices that you can either try or simply observe here on Homesong that I hope will provide some hands-on practice for your everyday life. More to come on this.
  • You can follow the hashtag #homesongbookclub on Instagram to see how others are finding the book as well. I will be sharing my favorite quotes from my own reading from time to time on Instagram, and you can follow up with those on the Highlights reel if you choose to.
  • Lastly, this book club is designed to flow with the rhythm of your life and whatever season you find yourself in! No one else’s. However you choose to implement all or part of this book club into your days is entirely up to you.
  • I am happy you are here. 🙂

Now onto the Autumn theme and book selections! The thematic unit I have chosen for this upcoming snuggly season is:

CONSCIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS & THE CLASSICAL ELEMENTS.

The Parenting book I’ve selected for September is The Conscious Parent: Transforming Ourselves, Empowering Our Children by Dr. Shefali PhD., a mindful read that illustrates how parenting can become an opportunity for spiritual awakening in our lives are caregivers. The author shares a practical yet soulful guide helping parents (and those who are in children’s lives) become more aware and attuned to young ones by respecting the whole child. This book does not delve into the classical elements (fire, water, air, earth) like those we will read in October and November, but more so in an more abstract way highlighting the four parts of our being: mind body, heart and soul.  What I love so much about this book is that it not only imparts impactful lessons for the parent-child relationship, but all relationships that focus on shared responsibilities, authentic trust, and deep communication. Parenthood is a sacred journey, and Dr. Shefali offers a refreshing lens through which we as readers can mold and shape our perspective as we make our way through with gratitude and grace.

The Existential book I’ve selected for October is The Four Elements: Reflections on Nature by John O’Donohue, a moving poetic read that explores the mystical reverence of the natural world and our sacred place it. O’Donohue is undoubtedly one of my favorite authors and thinkers, and including his book in this season’s roundup is a real treat. His words in The Four Elements are hauntingly beautiful as they take the reader through the classical elements, each one peeling back meaningful layers of what it means to be alive in this amazing and wonder-filled world we move about each day. This book is a short, meditative read that you could easily pick up on a lazy Sunday afternoon and finish by sundown, but it’s depth and weight is so transformative that I find you’ll be picking it up for years to come. I chose it for October because it’s the month of great visual change as Mother Nature goes from dusty green, to fiery gold, to burnt brown – a metamorphosis of elemental delight. It is my hope you will take this book along with you on afternoon walks as a reminder of the transient beauty that surrounds us throughout this short-lived season, breathing in both the known and unknown, and the alchemy that exists in the rhythmic world we share.

The Homemaking book I’ve selected for November is Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation by Michael Pollan, a spectacular and informative read that embarks on a literary adventure unearthing the mysteries of the four elements with respect to cooking at it’s most fundamental core. Cooked is divided into four distinct parts: fire, water, air, and earth, each posing mindful questions and food for thought for the reader to chew on as the author dives into the ancient wonders of bread making, barbecuing, fermenting, boiling, braising and the like. There are recipes, musings, scientific findings, travel-based anecdotes and other riveting tidbits that will help guide our community of readers down a more mindful path in the kitchen, one that seeks to improve our overall well-being and perspective on what it means to truly cook with care. I chose this particular book for November because it’s the month that gives way to cooking! With holiday feasts near the end, Cooked will be sure to offer many refreshing perspectives when it comes to time spent in the kitchen, and our mindful handling of, growing, purchasing, and making of food.

I would love to hear from those who are joining, perhaps a little hello, where you are from, and what you are most looking forward to! I will be sending off a Book Club Newsletter on the 1st of September, so if you have not yet signed up for that, feel free to do so above. And one more thing, to help support the time and energy that goes into creating and sustaining Homesong, the books above have been linked to an affiliate program where you can purchase your read through Amazon. By no means do you need to purchase these books through this site, but any efforts you can offer to further support the work I do is deeply appreciated! Thank you in advance if that is that path you choose, and happy reading!

With Care,
Amanda

  • Dani - Hi, Amanda. I can’t wait to read each and every one of these books! I have enjoyed your past recommendations, so I know these will be absolutely wonderful. I am a homeschooling (Utah) mama and my time is limited. Most often, my reading choices get set aside for children’s books. I need my children to see me getting lost in my own good books and not a device. Thank you for your timely posting!ReplyCancel

  • Kristina Franziska Haas - I have read Cooked a few times (I love all of Michael Pollan’s work!) and I am excited to dive in to the other two. I’ve followed you on IG for a while now, and I’m excited to participate more here. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about community, integrating virtual and “real life” friendships, and just general ways we can feel more fulfilled and connected without disappearing into technology. Books have always been my private refuge and I’m loving your idea! Looking forward to it.ReplyCancel

  • Bryanna Schoffstall - Hello! My name is Bryanna, I’m 20 years old, and I live in PA with my bff + husband, Evan! We just celebrated our 1 year wedding anniversary and bought our first house! I love cooking, baking, gardening, crafting, traveling, and worshipping Jesus✨Super excited to join this sweet book club with hopes of expanding my awareness and refreshing my soul!ReplyCancel

  • Miriam Padilla - So excited to read these! Particularly the parenting book, as there is always room for improvement. May I suggest people not buy from Amazon but rather purchase books from a different source? With all the strikes and protests against the ugly working conditions Amazon provide for its workers, around the world, I just couldn’t support this company, no matter how popular and big it is.ReplyCancel

  • Marcy - Hi Amanda,

I have enjoyed your blog from afar for a little over nine months, I thought I’d give the book club a try this fall.

I am a final-level seminary student in Virginia; I’m second-career (50+) and single with no kids, so I don’t plan to start until October (plus that gives me a month to get back into the day-to-day rhythm of school responsibilities.) When I graduate I dream of a deeper connection with my chosen vocation, integrated fully into my daily life and I have found your blog to be such an inspiration in that area. I’m excited to read and learn and share as I am able to further myself along with the idea of conscious and creative transformation. Cheers!ReplyCancel

  • Alicia - Hi! I’m Alicia, 30 years old, and getting ready to move from the midwest back home to CA with my husband, son, and baby on the way. I moved here 4 years ago to do my PhD, pregnant with my son who was born my first semester. These 4 years have been so difficult and draining, feeling constantly pulled between my work and my family and never feeling like I could give either the attention I wanted. I am writing my dissertation now, pregnant with my second baby, and with no plans to go on the academic job market. I want to be a fully present wife and mother, never again as busy as I have been these past few years. I am excited to go through these books as I simultaneously go through all these transitions: cross country move, finishing my doctorate, having a second baby, living near family for the first time since I’ve had kids, and staying home. Thank you for leading this group!ReplyCancel

  • Juliana - I will try and join 🙂 I have the conscious parent on my bookshelf and I have been meaning to pick it up for forever and this gives me the perfect reason too!ReplyCancel

  • Rachel Ward - Just a quick note to share that l, too, finished my dissertation while my firstborn was a baby. I’ve since had two babies and have yet to work full-time/per-time with my PhD. Everything has its season and I know it won’t be wasted. I share because I know the internal conflict that comes when you’ve laid down a hard earned degree to do a work that does not require it.

I hope you can fully embrace your season and enjoy being a mom and pursing other dreams of your heDr to the fullest. Blessings to you!ReplyCancel

  • Meghan - Hello, I’m Meghan. I’m from Ontario, Canada. I’ve been a homesong blog reader for a while now. It speaks to my soul in so many ways and I can’t wait to read the books you’ve recommended, Amanda. Thanks for sharing!ReplyCancel

  • Dee - Actually looking so forward to this! It will force me to take some down time and also finish a book. I already own Conscience Parent, but have yet to finish. This will get it done lol 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Heather - Hello! So excited to join in. I’m Heather from Jefferson City, Missouri. Amanda, I always recommend your blog to my friends and find myself drawn to it when I’m feeling like I’m in a rut. It has inspired so much good in our family. I love to read and discuss so I’m really looking forward to diving in. Cheers to a good September.ReplyCancel

  • Kate - Hi Amanda! I started following you on Instagram because I fell in love with your home decorating style. I’m currently a stay at home parent, and you constantly inspire me with ways to keep a natural, calm, and intentional space in my home, and for that I thank you. I love living my life in harmony with the seasons of the year and the rythmns of the earth, and it was so nice to find your pictures and to learn that there were other women like myself out there (I don’t know too many people like me.) Thank you also for sharing the excerpts and quotes from books and poetry. I consider books the timeline of my life, and my favorite thing to do is read, whether for myself or to my children. This 33 year old momma near Philadelphia is so excited to connect with you and with everyone else through this book club!ReplyCancel

  • Ashley - Hi Amanda! I grew up in Kansas City, but fourteen years ago I went to Austria on a Fulbright to teach.. but met my love while teaching and stayed. We have two wonderful daughters. We love Austria but relish our summers in Kansas City and love soaking up the temps and humidity. Anyway… I’ve followed your blog for a while and I am excited about this book club! Anything Michael Pollan excites me and looking forward to the other choices as well! XoReplyCancel

  • Melissa - Hi, my name is Melissa, I am 37 and mother of Sofia (7) and Camila (3). We are currently living in Barcelona, Spain ( last 10 years) but we have also been in Guatemala and Brazil. I was born in Venezuela and married to a Brazilian. I studied Marketing but after some years decided for a change and became an English teacher for preschool and primary years. I am very excited to join your bookclub because I love your ideas, how you express yourself so well abd beautiful and because all three books seem to fit my interests and things I want to learn and share. I have been following your for the last 2 years and you are definately a role model for me. Thanks for sharing your work and love!ReplyCancel

    • admin - Melissa, welcome and hello from the US! Andrew and I have always wanted to travel to Spain and hope to go there some day with our kiddos. Thank you for joining us! x AmandaReplyCancel

  • Rachael - Hello! My name is Rachael and I live in the Pacific Northwest. Like many others, I found you on Instagram and consider that discovery to be a gift that keeps on giving. I followed along last January with the break from social media and it is the healthiest and sanest I had felt in such a long time. I already own THE CONSCIOUS PARENT: TRANSFORMING OURSELVES, EMPOWERING OUR CHILDREN and now will finally prioritize the time to read it 🙂 I love how thoughtfully you curate the books/ podcasts/ general information that you share. Thank you!ReplyCancel

  • Erika - Hello! I’m looking forward to reading these books- I enjoy bookclubs because they often lead me to read books I wouldn’t always pick myself. I’m a new(ish) mom of a 15 month old in Pittsburgh.ReplyCancel

  • Noelle Brandaw - I’m so looking forward to this! I have read The Conscious Parent but am due for a re-read and I have not yet read the other two, though I am a Michael Pollan fan already. We live near Austin, TX on 5 acres with two cats and a pony. I’m a secular homeschooler to my 6 and 9 year old daughters and a practicing Buddhist.ReplyCancel

  • Jacqueline Beach - hi, i’ve been reading you for a long time now – years and have participated in the previous book club (LOVED The Hidden Life of Trees, though if I’m being honest, I didn’t finish it because sometimes I have a problem with finishing books…and other things), Rest Retreat, and other wonderful resources you’ve so generously shared with us. I too love your aesthetic and beautiful writing and open heart. My husband and I have 3 young children – 7, 5, 2, and we are a Waldorf family – I teach parent and child classes at our local school and this will be my first year teaching a nursery class also. So I love that intersection as well as your love of cooking, yoga, reading, camping, gardening, etc. And your book and podcast selections are always ON POINT. I started The Conscious Parent and was loving it, but then had to return it to the library. Might need to buy a copy now. And the John O’Donohue episode on On Being is one of my top three episodes. Stunning. And I love Michael Pollan too, ever since Omnivore’s Dilemma. I’m also curious about his new book How to Change Your Mind. Thank you for putting this together and I look forward to participating as much as my time allows! sending love to all of you here.ReplyCancel

  • kathleen - hello amanda! i’m kathleen from victoria, bc, canada. i’m mom to pia, 3, and expecting my second (a boy) in october, so book suggestions for a cozy winter with a new baby will definitely come in handy! i’ve loved following your blog and instagram since i came across them a couple years ago. the way you share your experiences of daily life w family has helped me find my own path a little more in this life with kids that seemed so overwhelming and disorienting in the beginning… it seems like finally our own rhythms are emerging as i’m learning how to be the mom my kids need without losing myself completely. as an introvert who loves a lot of the quieter things in life and succumbs to stress easily, it’s been so nice to see that’s it’s possible to have the larger family i always longed to have and to be a loving mom and partner while still remembering to take a breath and stay true to myself even when life gets crazy. your work is so inspiring, thank you!!ReplyCancel

  • Megan - First of all, I love following you on IG. You bring such light and joy to the world and I often find peace as comfort when I see your posts. Thank you for that. Plus, I grew up in Warrensburg, MO and I just don’t get back there enough. It’s nice to see some Midwest beauty, which is very different from Portland, OR, where I live now. And I do miss it.
I am so excited for the books you have chosen! The parenting book is exactly what I need right now. I have 3 kids, (almost) 2, 4 and 6 and I just turned 30 (with mixed feelings). Recently I have been struggling with depression and finding joy in parenting. So I’ve tried a new (for me) approach, where instead of looking at my children as work to be done and obstacles to peace and cleanliness, I try to see them as real people full of joy and purity and deserving of my love and kindness. I love that you have found a book that delves into this. I do see myself in my kids, and I don’t want them to become people who have short tempers and sharp words, but people full of love and kindness. So that is the kind of person I need to be. Thank you for finding this book, I am so excited to read it and I have already requested my copy from the library 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Melissa - Hello, i’m Melissa 32 from south Florida. Stay at home mama to Abby (8 months) and Mason (soon to be 5 yrs). I have been looking forward to this for months and can’t wait to begin. Last year i made a New Years resolution to make more time for myself by reading and i came across your bookclub in which i fell in love with your book selections “the book of joy” is specially one i have held on tight to. Thank you for sharing and creating such a wonderful space!ReplyCancel

  • Sarah - Hi there! My name is Sarah, I live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, and two children who are 4 and 2. I stay at home with my kids and work very part time as a designer. I found your old blog years ago before I had kids and just loved your aesthetic and the thoughtful care you put into so much of your life and share with us. I have heard of the Conscious Parent on a Super Soul podcast but have yet to read it. It sounds amazing though. The other two books, I’ve read other works by the authors, but am excited to read these. Thank you so much for putting this together, Amanda!ReplyCancel

  • Eleni - Hi Amanda! I am Eleni, Greek girl living in north Italy with my two daughters and husband. I follow your blog and Instagram account for a long time and I am really looking forward to this book club. I always enjoyed your suggestions! Thank you 🙂ReplyCancel

  • Kirsten - Hi Amanda,

I’ve followed your blog for years but I’m new to the book club! I’m excited to read the John O’Donahue book–I’m not sure whether I’ll join on the other two because my reading list is simply too long and I don’t feel as drawn to them, but I can’t wait for October. I live in Michigan with my husband and 12 month old, and I’m a new stay-home parent after finishing my graduate degree as well–Alicia and Rachel, you’re in good company!ReplyCancel

  • Emily - Hi! I’m excited to read your selections! I read regularly on these topics, and have not come across these titles before. I am 41, stay at home mom, wife, and caregiver. I look forward to new learning and dialogue with others!ReplyCancel

  • Andrea - Hello! I’m Andrea. I live in a small town in British Columbia and am a stay at home mom to a one year old and a three year old. I’m trying to live more minimally and mindfully with the seasons. Life with little ones seems so hectic sometimes that it is nice to take time to slow down. I love everything about Homesong for inspiring me in mindfulness and homemaking 🙂 I will be 31 in October and am particularly looking forward to the John O’Donohue read for that month! Thank you for putting this together Amanda!ReplyCancel

  • Kylie - Hello! My name is Kylie and I’m from the bay area, California. I always find myself drawn to your posts because of your focus and thoughts on slow, intentional living and constantly strive to make steps towards implementing that in my own life. I’m not yet a mother, but a nanny to a newborn and a 5 year old, as well as a part time preschool teacher. I’m excited about all three genres we are delving into with this book club, as I can relate to each and every one personally. I am also quite the introvert so it can be difficult to find people or groups that I feel I fit into comfortably, and for that I thank you for your work to pull this special community together.
    xxReplyCancel

  • Payton - Hi! I’m Payton and I live on the shore of Lake Michigan in a small town called Saint Joseph. I’m 22 years old and am a recent graduate from the psychology department of Michigan State University. I’ve been following along for quite awhile on Instagram and am so excited to join in book club. The past few years have been full of required reading and textbooks so reading for pleasure is something I am really looking forward to!ReplyCancel

  • Jacqueline Henry - Hello Amanda,

I have also been following you on insta for a few years now but I have a 3 year old boy and a 10 month old girl and rarely make time to read and do things for myself! I am so excited to commit to this bookclub and connect with other likeminded moms. I appreciate all the work you put into sharing your mothering with us!
    Jacqueline xoxoReplyCancel

  • lorietoll86545 - I was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?ReplyCancel

  • Pamela - Bonjour Amanda! I’m Pamela, married to a good Frenchman, a working mama to 3 lively kids (9, 6 and 2) and an energetic boxer puppy! We live in the French Alps. (J’ai vu que vous aimez aussi la langue française ! Si jamais vous voulez pratiquer, n’hésitez pas ! ;)).
I found your blog last year and have always loved reading your posts. I love the way you write, it’s so incredibly calming and like a breath of fresh air. I’m very excited about joining the book club and reading the books you’ve chosen! Amicalement, PamelaReplyCancel

  • Jillian - Hi! I’m Jillian from Chattanooga, TN. I’m a full-time stay at home mama to Atticus (2.5) and Maggie (5 months) and part-time holistic nutritionist and strength and conditioning trainer for women! I am obsessed with learning everything I can about natural health and living…it’s the one topic that pulls me out of my introverted mind and onto my soapbox 😉 I’m convinced we might be the same person, Amanda, because every single one of your personality test results match mine…it’s wild! Looking forward to these books, I tend to focus on novels and health books but am looking to expand my non-fiction reads. I find it hard to fit reading into my day with littles underfoot and in constant need for attention, but am getting better about resting during their quiet time! My son LOVES books, including the ones in my hands that he HAS to yank out and flip through them himself 😂 Thank you for all that you do, I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled across your blog years ago after you had Alfie and read your experience with PPD/PPA while feeling my own shadow of crippling anxiety following the birth of my son. It has become a passion of mine to reach out to new moms and offer an ear and honesty. I’m in the process of creating a program for the post-part in period that includes diet, lifestyle and supplementation recommendations to support our bodies and brains in what is the hardest transition we will make in our lifetimes! It has helped me to not only survive my second post-partum period but THRIVE! Ok, soapbox rant over! Excited to be here!ReplyCancel

  • Molly - Hi I’m Molly from Atlanta! A former teacher who recently stepped away from teaching to be home with my 2 kiddos (6 and 3). Im navigating the waters of staying at home and find myself saying “yes” to all the things! Suppose its the teacher in me that doesnt feel comfortable unless multitasking 10 things at once. I’m looking forward to finding our new rhythm as a family and filling my pockets of time with meaningful words and practices I can use to help our family. Happy to join the Homesong community as I’ve followed Amanda on Insta for a few years now and find such comfort and calm in her tidbits of motherly, woman and human advice. Excited to get my nose back in books other than Fox in Socks and Nighty Night Construction Site!ReplyCancel

  • Jules - Hello Amanda, My name is Jules and I live in Bristol, England. I a 40 year old mom (mum as we say in the UK) to two young boys. Ordered the books from my local library (love our local library) and am looking forward to reading all three.ReplyCancel

  • Sonja Bee - Hi – I joined because I love to read and I love talking about the books that I have read, although I have no children and so probably won’t do the first month’s book. I did check at the library though and I am 26th on the list so probably won’t happen. It does sound interesting so I put my name down anyway and will read it when it comes — sometime in November probably, lol, but then I will have read everyone’s thoughts on it and that will let me see in it many more lights over my own. I live in Vancouver, Canada. I am near retirement age – not that many years to go but I am very tired of working and going to go early so I have more time for things like this reading club. I love how you have divided the books by season and type and looking forward to learning new things from both the books and the community.ReplyCancel

  • Kosima - Hi Amanda, my name is Kosima, I am 41 and a mom of two girls (7 and 4) in the western part of Germany. I follow your blog for several years now, like when our 4 year olds where just born. 😉 And they’ll be 5 soon! I love all your recommendations – music, books, food, oils, just everything really. So I of course wanted to join this book club. Since I joined a few days late I missed the first newsletter. Would you please be so kind and send it to me? Thank you so much for this blog and everything. You are a true blessing!ReplyCancel

  • Sonja Bee - Yes, I have the same wish as Kosima — could I get the first newsletter too please?thanks!!ReplyCancel

I live in the Bay Area, CA with my husband and two kids (ages 6 and 2). I work close to full time, and am continually seeking inspiration as I make tweaks to our family life. Your blog serves as my “slow life” muse. Your words and pictures are a reminder to me to be present in my parenting and everyday doings, and to slow down. Thank you.ReplyCancel

  • Siobhan - Hi Amanda! My name is Siobhan, I’m 34 years old and I live in Hertfordshire, UK where we recently moved from London. Your book club is such a wonderful idea, and I’ve finally got around to ordering the first book to delve into this weekend. I am most looking forward to embracing the seasons ahead, and being really mindful of how I parent my wonderfully intelligent, confident and precocious 2.5 year old who is fast growing up before my eyes. With another one on the way (currently 4 months pregnant) I am keen to embrace all the mindfulness I possible can and enjoy every moment of the Autumn and Winter. Your book club will be just the thing to help me do that! Wishing you a wonderful Autumn xReplyCancel
